About This Game Walkerman is a Visual Novel about hunting supernatural creatures. Each creature obeys a unique set of rules which must be exploited in order to defeat them, in a fashion similar to the old folk tales about vampires and garlic, or werewolves and silver bullets. Each act of Walkerman centers on a creature and the process of investigating it. Players will study the monster in order to ascertain its weaknesses, gather the necessary items, and then confront it in battle. Combat takes place on an isometric, pseudo-board game in which the player selects actions from a list of options. These battle sequences have multiple solutions, depending on the player's collected items and their knowledge of the monster. Players also steer the protagonist through his personal life in a similar fashion: deciding who to trust, where to borrow money, etc which alters how the story progresses.Prologue: The Thing in the WealdJorgen, a nineteen year-old serf, has just embarked upon a peculiar career: monster hunting. Absolutely worth the purchase.EDIT: I've high expectations for Act 2 to begin with, but it still exceeded my expectations with its high polish and astoundingly culture rich writing. There are a couple of bugs, but it was nothing gamebreaking. I would highly recommend any avid visual novel reader to try this out.. tl;dr - Feels a lot like Witcher: The Visual Novel. The world is a bit lighter shade of grey, but still quite morally ambiguous. Like The Witcher series, the primary conflict is really between people rather than with the monsters. It also has a very similar theme in terms of combat - a lot of investigation and legwork beforehand to set up for the actual encounter. The protagonist is pretty realistically part of the world, i.e. somewhat of a newbie ignorant racist that means well and tries to be moral within his society's definition of morality. If you enjoyed the culture clash digressions in The Witcher, you'd probably like it here. Also seems to have the same chick magnet thing going. It's pretty short as of now and somewhat limited in choices, but if it continues as is throughout the series, it could be pretty impressive. Note though that the prose does tend towards the purple side of the spectrum, which I find somewhat annoying.. Walkerman is a pretty unique game. The closest comparison I can come up with is that it's similar to a Witcher VN. The focus is, rather than on killing monsters, you're supposed to find out how you're supposed to do that, experimenting and inquiring to find the set of rules each creature operates on. It's literally a matter of life or death, and requires you to keep a close eye on the plot and any odd occurences, lest you miss a detail that leads to your horrible, horrible death.Speaking of the story, the setting's great. The game does a very good job of putting you in the shoes of Jorgen, rather than making him a self-insert. He's a rural farm-boy with a set of prejudices and preconceptions that leads to some very interesting internal monologues and reactions to other characters. It's an age of decadence and corruption, and he can't help but see moral failings in everyone he sees; the foreign dancer-girl, who you'd expect your average VN protagonist to lust after, is instead labelled a degenerate. It's lovely.I really enjoyed this game, and I'm looking forward to seeing Act 2.. Edit: After completing chapter 2 and absolutely loving it I can safely say that the majority of my issues were dealt with. The main character does indeed begin to lose some of the stick up his♥♥♥♥♥ That and the little flashes of brilliance shine much brighter and more consistently. It is definitely worth slogging though his tirades in this if only so you can appreciate how far he comes later.Conflicted. I liked most things about the game, the story, the setting, and the characters -except- for the main character, he is insufferable. Honestly having to view the world through his eyes almost spoils the whole thing. He isn't a complete jackass but having to listen to his teenage angst ridden self righteous tirades about how the world is falling into "degeneracy" and how everyone is a degenerate but him was a bit much. The story could have focused so much more heavily on the interesting elements of what being a walkerman entails and having more encounters with the weird but instead it chooses to linger on its protagonist's reactionary political views. You could cut a solid 80% of the massive political diatribes and have a better game.I might still pick up chapter 2 If there's some kind of growth in the main protagonist or at least significantly less of his whinging because I think that there is a very strong setting and elements outside of the main character are handled well. There were many points were I wished this was a more traditional RPG where I could pick how my character felt about things. As it is I would liken the experience to going on an amazing fantasy monster hunt while being stuck with a teenage edge lord whining the whole way.. I've played for 31 minutes, and haven't actually gotten a chance yet to do anything besides left-click to see the next line of dialogue. Which would be more tolerable if the story itself didn't read like a much blander version of The Witcher. Composer Peter McConnell joins works on Irony Curtain Score: Agents!Today we have a top secret, exciting message from our on headquarters! When we first announced Irony Curtain, we promised – no elevator music! That’s why we have established a Matryoshkan collaboration with an extremely esteemed, experienced agent: Peter McConnell. All fans of classic point and clicks will recognize that name – such hits as the Grim Fandango or Monkey Island series would not be complete without the splendid soundtracks that enhanced the adventures of the wacky, weird heroes. The enormously successful composer collaborated with Arkadiusz Reikowski - best known for his work on Layers of Fear, Kholat and AM’s My Brother Rabbit - on the OST to Irony Curtain, which resulted in an larger-than-life Original Soundtrack. Peter created the Main Theme, which inspired Arkadiusz's further work on the OST - the effect of their endavors is available on Soundcloud[soundcloud.com] and Bandcamp[arkadiuszreikowski.bandcamp.com] as we speak!Irony Curtain from Matryoshka with Love is the satirical, classic p’n’c adventure about espionage and a bizarre, communist Matryoshka, full of no-nonsense riddles, politically incorrect jokes and vivid, intense characters you’ll be dying to meet.Click one of the links above and go listen – then let us know what you think on twitter or facebook!Check out the whole video: https://youtu.be/qh-AKz5DP4kAnd add Irony Curtain to your wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/866190/Irony_Curtain_From_Matryoshka_with_Love/. Creating dialogues in Irony Curtain: Irony Curtain: From Matryoshka with Love is a game full of different characters talking to each other. In fact, some puzzles can be solved only by choosing the right dialogue option. That’s why in today’s episode of Behind the Irony Curtain we’d like to tell you more about the process of creating dialogues in our game. Writing dialogues is just the beginning of the process. There are over 5471 lines of text in Irony Curtain and every one of them needs to be properly inserted into the game, to make sure all characters say exactly what Game Designer wants, in the exact time and place. Here’s how it looks in Irony Curtain: 1. Every game character usually has more than one dialogue line. One of the ways to operate it is to use logical TRUE/FALSE flags. These flags helps us determine the state of knowledge of a specific character or whether an event of which the character speaks has already taken place. 2. Each dialogue is built in the editor as a separate “tree” consisting of successive “nodes” connected with each other by lines defining the order in which the dialogue of the character appears. 3. To be honest, “writing” dialogues is just filling the form fields. It looks more or less like this: Create a new dialogue in the editor and give it a name. Then inform Level Designer about the circumstances in which it should be launched (eg. when Evans checks on the Prisoner); Create the first Node (a red dot on the editor screen) and enter the necessary information (into the form on the right side of the screen): Who is talking The Dialogue text (or several dialogues if they should be drawn) (Optional) The Dialogue text when repeating the talk (Optional) If the dialogue happens not on the location but on zoom – whose head and on which side should it be displayed (Optional) Text display time (it’s useful when testing the game without recorded Voice Overs which determine the text display time in the finished game) Where the text should appear on the screen (e.g. over the character or over the radio speaker) (Optional) Actions to be made before or after the dialogue (e.g. acquiring an item or activating a logic flag “character X already knows about Y") Create another dialogue node and fill it in Connect the first node with the second one Rinse & Repeat ;)4. After creating the entire “tree” for all the dialogues we generate so-called “keys”. Keys consist of the location number, dialogue name, text position in the tree and the first letter specifying the character. 5. Thanks to this we can assign a specific Key to a Node, and not just the text. All texts with Keys can be saved to a shared Excel sheet with different languages. As a result, the different language versions of the game have the appropriate dialogues. That is all in this episode of Behind the Irony Curtain. Before we announce some more details about the Irony Curtain: From Matryoshka with Love (which you can still add to wishlist by the way), we have something very special for classic adventure games fans!Although Matryoshkans love potatoes the most, there’s also one more thing close to our hearts. It’s eggs. Easter eggs to be exact. Irony Curtain is set in the 50s, but we did our best to spice it up a little with pop culture references from modern movies, comics, games and classic point & clicks. It’s kind of mandatory thing when creating the classic adventure game. Overall, we keep the balance between the story and the references, and there are places you will have a hard time finding them, but sometimes we literally go crazy with Easter eggs in some locations. Just look at the screenshot below and try to find all the references we’ve hidden there. There’s also a hint under spoiler below: ANSWERS:1. key in the shape of Sauron's Eye2. shape of the island from Monkey Island 3. sketch of a key game from Machinarium 4. crow from Enigmatis 2 5. Pirates of the Carribean key 6. Konami CodeThe medals are more monothematic because they are all inspired by the works of one studio. Can you guess what every one of them refers to?Don't forget to add Irony Curtain to wishlist!https://store.steampowered.com/app/866190/Irony_Curtain_From_Matryoshka_with_Love/. Our love letter to point and clicks - launching tomorrow!: We love classic point and click adventures. That’s why we decided to write a love letter to classic p’n’cs - in the form of Irony Curtain. Creating a game that channeled our nostalgia and allowed us to include our collective experiences of the communist regime in Poland in a humorous way was a dream come true. We believe there still are people who love this particular genre as much as we do – and maybe that there are more who will be hooked on point and clicks after playing the right game, hence the mixture of nostalgia and improvements we presented in Irony Curtain. Since the story is one of the most important elements in classic p'n'c games , so we made sure to have a well-written plot and interesting characters - Irony Curtain is about a goofy pen-pusher who gets tangled up in the spy-standoff between two powers. We wanted Evan to be likeable while also making him Guybrushingly funny – he's an unwilling troublemaker and works really well juxtaposed with all the other characters, such as the ruthless Leader or Anna - who's smart, capable, mysterious... We wanted strong personalities to match the story and then we peppered it all with puzzles. A lot of puzzles. And when we say “a lot” - we mean it. And mini-games too. This is where our HOPA background comes in – we're really good in mini-games. They’re not a classical p’n’c mechanic, but we know they enrich the gameplay, allow to pace it and also are a good excercise for the brain. It’s also a tribute to our legacy – we even have one hidden object scene in Irony Curtain as an easter egg! And believe us when we say - there’s plenty easter eggs for you to enjoy – try to find out if there really are 1951 hidden around Matryoshka. You can also read our previous Steam announcement on the topic here. That’s another point where the past intertwines with the present, bringing in jokes for both the fan of The Lord of the Rings and F.E.A.R alike. We strived to create a game both familiar but also somehow innovative – that's why the interface is exactly as you know it from other games. If you’re a p’n’c player, you’ll know your way around from the getgo – the inventory, the icons telling you what kind of an action is available, etc. As both players and creators we know that being frustrated is not fun – the game is supposed to be a challenge (like in the old, golden days) but at the same time we wanted the solutions to be more reasonable than “use chickend and bucket to make a helicopter”. The point is to get the satisfaction of solving a riddle using your brain, not a walkthrough. The puzzles in Irony Curtain can be ambigous, challenging but never absurd (and some of them can even be solved in multiple ways). The only absurdity you’ll encounter is the historical absurds that we really lived through. Yes, bribing people was normal. Yes, TP was a precious commodity and we stood in unending queues. But we hope that thanks to this you’ll not only get some mind excercise but also will learn about the oddities we had to live through back in the day. When we pitched the game as ‘Deponia meets Papers, please’ we were hoping to add value to the genre we loved talking about topics we cared about. And we believe we did. We hope we brought to the table all the things classical p’n’cs represent: humour, wit, riddles and story that’ll draw you for long hours (up to 10 😉) so that the fans of classical point and click adventures will feel at home with Irony Curtain – and those who are new to the genre will get hooked! Some time ago we showed you how Irony Curtain looked in the early prototype phase and how it looks like now. Today we’d like to talk a little bit more about the reasons behind the change and the whole creative process. It’s no doubt that Irony Curtain came a long way from the times when it was just a prototype called simply ‘Matryoshka’. There are three main reasons why we’ve decided to simplify the art style: 1. The previous style looked great but it didn’t play well.
